2020 Orphan Train Rider Celebration

The 2020 Orphan Train Celebration will be held at the National Orphan Train Complex and other sites in Concordia Kansas on June 4, 5 & 6. ALL LOCATIONS, TIMES AND PRICES WILL BE POSTED AS THEY ARE CONFIRMED.

Thursday, June 4 

Dr. Jeremy Kohomban, President and CEO of Children’s Village and Harlem Dowling, will share his experience as a leader in family support and residential treatment reform. Children’s Village, previously known as the New York Juvenile Asylum, is a residential treatment facility and school for troubled children.

NOTC will also be hosting a “Business After Hours,” Thursday, which will be open to the public.

Friday, June 5 

NOTC will dedicate a new brick platform, north of the Jones Education Station.

NOTC Curator, Shaley K. George, will present on the History of Children of Color and the Orphan Train. Orphan Train Riders were diverse but placing out children of color was complicated. George will present on the 47 nationalities placed out, the difficulties surrounding their placements and who these children were.

The NOTC Orphan Train Celebration continues with a statue unveiling at the Concordia Post Office. The statue, will honor Orphan Train Rider, John Jacobus.

A film documentary will be presented, and a ticketed box meal will be served. Carriage rides will be available.

Saturday, June 6

Emmy-winning writer/producer and Orphan Train descendant, Clark Kidder will be giving a presentation on the history of the New York Juvenile Asylum and the role it played in the Orphan Train Movement. Kidder will also debut his new multi-volume set of books chronicling the history of the New York Juvenile Asylum and its Orphan Trains, documenting the names of thousands of orphan train riders sent west from the Asylum between the years 1854-circa 1921, as well as the names of the foster parents to whom they were indentured or placed. Kidder co-wrote/produced the documentary West by Orphan Train.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear the descendants of our Orphan Train Riders.

Pippa White will offer a presentation preceding the premiere of her documentary film.

There be outside activities and tours in the afternoon.

The President’s Award Banquet will be held in the evening.
